Coordinating Your Thanksgiving Feast With Your Home-Based Business

Most professionals get to enjoy a day or two extra off from work when Thanksgiving rolls around—often with pay. Some professions have to work, such as medical personnel, police, and many retail outlets, but they often receive extra pay because of it.

What about home-based business owners? How do they manage around the holidays? Simply put—they either work or they don’t make as much money as usual. This is one of the draw-backs of being your own boss.

Kitchen-related Party Sales: Tupperware and Pampered Chef

Become a Virtual Assistant

Kim Scott, Kansas City Home-Based Business Examiner
Virtual assistance is not new, but it’s certainly new to many people. A virtual assistant is much more than a telecommuting secretary. According to VAnetworking.com “A Virtual Assistant (VA) is a highly-trained independent entrepreneur who provides a myriad of business support services virtually via phone, fax and internet based technology to support and meet the growing needs of businesses worldwide.”

A virtual assistant often specializes in certain business aspects such as marketing, graphic design, sales, etc. Some virtual assistants may be employed by one company and simply telecommute. Most, however, are small business owners and their business is to provide support to other small and large business owners from their home office.

Kim Scott, Kansas City Home-Based Business Examiner
A home-based business has long been the income producing stand-by for stay-at-home moms. Think about the women from 100 years ago who “took in” laundry to wash and/or iron for strangers, those who made alterations or sewed entire outfits for their “grocery money.” Then there have always been the moms who have watched their neighbor’s child and this has often evolved into a full-fledged home daycare.

Home-based businesses have also been the traditional method of supporting a family well before the industrial age altered much of our notions about “work”. Farmers are probably the oldest and most well-known home-based business people, although few people would think of that as a home-based business.

Red flags that a home-based business opportunity is a scam

Kim Scott, Kansas City Home-based Business Examiner

The advertisement in the classifieds of the Star promises a six figure income with minimum effort. New affiliates of almost any business should expect minimum income and maximum effort.

The website shows great cars and yachts the other affiliates purchased, supposedly a matter of months after entering the business. If they bought them, it wasn’t with the money they earned from their new business.

Stigma Attached to Being a Work-At-Home-Mom (WAHM)

September 10th, 2009 by Cristina Favreau

Last week I asked an innocent question on one of the VA discussion boards about VAs opinions on the work-at-home-mom label. An animated and passionate conversation ensued!

Based on the conversation, most VAs feel the work-at-home-mom label casts a negative or unprofessional light on their services to their clients and prospects.
